Banana Yucca - Yucca Baccata
The Banana Yucca (Yucca baccata) is a rugged, architectural succulent that brings a high-desert aesthetic to landscapes. Named for its large, fleshy, and edible green fruits that resemble short fat bananas, this plant was historically a vital resource for indigenous people who used its fruit for food and its fibrous leaves for cordage and basketry. In the garden, it forms a dense, mounded clump of stiff, sword-shaped leaves with a distinctive blue-green hue and curly white fibers along the margins. It is exceptionally tough, thriving in the reflected heat of inland valleys or the rocky soils of our local mountains, and it serves as a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant focal point.
