The Japanese Black Pine is one of the most popular traditional tree choices for an Asian Garden Landscape yard design. It's a strong species that tolerates wind, heat, drought and salt. Their needles have a rich deep emerald to dark green color and grows dense on its branches. It develops lime green candles in late spring that change into a dark brown color in mid fall.

Older needles will shed during mid to late fall. As the tree ages, the young gray branches turn dark black-brown with scale plates all over the trunk and larger branches. This gives it a much older rustic look.
