Plant Sizing Guide

The Spineless Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia cacanapa 'Ellisiana') is a fast-growing, evergreen cactus favored for its smooth, pad-like stems and lack of traditional long spines. It is a cold-hardy selection of a species native to South Texas and Mexico that forms dense, spreading mounds consisting of thick, fleshy "cladodes" (pads) that store water, allowing it to thrive in arid environments and xeric landscapes. In late spring to summer, it features large, bright yellow flowers that are a favorite of pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. These are followed by edible, reddish-pink egg-shaped fruits known as "tunas".
