Our Lord's Candle
A widespread southern California and Baja native that’s instantly recognizable for its giant flower spikes which grow 10 to 15 feet tall and are covered in hundreds of large, fragrant, cream-colored, bell-shaped flowers. Grows as a single, spherical rosette consisting of stiff, narrow, blue-grey leaves. Leaves are finely saw-toothed along the margins and end in a sharp point. Matures within 5 to 10 years at which point it sends up its distinctive flower spike. Once flowering has occurred, the primary rosette will die, leaving behind a cluster of smaller offsets that will persist. Plant in full sun to light shade. Tolerant of sandy, clay, and gravelly soils. Water occasionally to infrequently once established. Various sub-species have been defined within its range.
