Plant Sizing Guide

Asian Black Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum 'Asian Black') is a heirloom variety prized for its striking dark purple to nearly black stalks on mature plants. Unlike commercial green varieties, this "chewing cane" is famous for its soft peel and tender interior, making it easy to enjoy fresh or press for sweet, mineral-rich juice. It is a shorter-growing variety, featuring wide, arching green leaves that create a tropical texture in gardens or as a seasonal screen. Beyond its ornamental and culinary value, Asian Black Sugarcane thrives in hot, wet conditions. It is often used in permaculture or "food forest" designs, particularly in greywater systems where it can soak up excess moisture.

Sugar cane is a tall grass which looks rather like a bamboo cane. The cane plant is a coarse growing member of the grass family with juice or sap high in sugar content. This tropical plant is ready in 11-18 months. The mature stems may vary from 4 to 12 feet or more ill height, and in commercial varieties are from 0.75 to 2 inches in diameter. The stem has joints or nodes as in other grasses. Nice alternative to bamboo since it provides privacy and is edible. Sugar canes are extremely sweet.
